After meeting Abbey Lincoln in the last few months of her life, it changed my life significantly to meet my hero. Why? because I knew who I was in the presence of. Seeing her fragile didn't change my opinion. She spoke to me like anyone else. I even took a chance & began singing her tune! This tune! She became very lucid, with that look she used to sing with! She sat up & looked into my eyes & we sang Throw it Away! Midway thru the tune I could barely see her, my eyes had welled up with tears. It was life changing. She told me her favorite singer was Billie Holiday! I went back to see her a second time and spent the afternoon with Abbey looking for more inspiration. She surely gave me some. I had already recorded her tune. I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to honor Abbey's melody. It is perfect the way it is. I asked the Musicians to keep it open & to create a John Coltrane ish vibe. That is just what they did. It was free, open, they listened to one another & it became something really vibrant & beautiful!
I love to improvise & they definitely gave me something beautiful to work with! This recording was the result of the musicians seeing my vision!
